Order of Shadows

For those who seek initiation. The Gate is not a door that can be knocked upon. It is a state of readiness. When you are ready, the Order will know. The shadow connects all things, and the Order listens to the shadow.
The Order does not accept applications. The Order does not conduct interviews. The Order does not recruit. The Order finds. If the Order has not found you, it is because you are not yet ready, or because your path lies elsewhere. Do not seek the Order. Let the Order seek you. The shadow knows its own.
There are, however, signs that the Order is watching. A stranger who appears at significant moments and says nothing. A book that appears on your shelf that you did not place. A dream that recurs with increasing clarity. A silence that deepens when you enter a room. These are not invitations. They are observations. The Order is observing you. Continue as you were. If you are ready, the Gate will open.
No address. No application. Wait.
For keepers and initiates in distant lands. The Order maintains a system of correspondence that operates through encrypted channels, accessible only to those who have been given the key. The key is not a password. It is a way of reading.
The Midnight Correspondence is sent at the hour of midnight, local time, on the first day of each month. The correspondence contains updates on the Order's activities, announcements of upcoming rites, astronomical calculations for the Communion, and personal messages between keepers. The correspondence is written in a cipher that changes with each lunar cycle. The cipher is not distributed. It is intuited. Keepers who have lost the intuition are said to have lost the shadow, and are gently retired from active duty.
The correspondence is not transmitted electronically. The Order does not trust electronic transmission. The correspondence is written by hand, sealed with wax, and delivered through a network of couriers who do not know what they carry. The couriers are not members of the Order. They are people who have been helped by the Order in the past and who repay the debt by carrying letters without asking questions.

For urgent matters. A sigil may be drawn — in ash, in salt, in ink — and left in a place where the shadow is strong. The Order does not guarantee a response. The sigil is not a command. It is a request, and the shadow answers in its own time.
The sigil is the Order's personal sigil, taught to the initiate during the Rite of Binding. It is not to be shared. It is not to be drawn casually. Each drawing of the sigil creates a resonance in the shadow, and excessive drawing creates excessive resonance, which the Order experiences as a disturbance. The Order permits each keeper to draw the sigil of summoning no more than three times per year. The initiate may draw it once, in the most dire circumstance of their life.
The sigil is drawn on a surface that will be destroyed — sand that will be washed away, ash that will be scattered, paper that will be burned. The sigil is not permanent. It is a temporary opening, a momentary channel. When the surface is destroyed, the channel closes. The Order has received every sigil ever drawn. The Order has responded to approximately one in ten. The Order does not explain its criteria for response.
Draw. Wait. Do not repeat.
For matters concerning the Order as a whole. The Council convenes at each solstice and equinox. Petitions may be submitted through the Midnight Correspondence channel. The Council does not respond to all petitions. It responds to those that resonate.
The Council consists of seven keepers, chosen by the previous Council, serving for a period of seven years. The Council meets in a chamber beneath the Order's primary temple, accessible only through the same passage used in the Rite of Descent. The Council sits in total darkness. The Council does not speak. The Council communicates through the shadow, through the Communion, through the shared consciousness that the shadow provides.
The Council's decisions are not announced. They are enacted. A keeper who has petitioned the Council will know the Council's response not by letter but by circumstance — a change in their assignment, a new keeper arriving at their temple, an old keeper departing. The Council's word is the shadow's word. It is not questioned. It is not appealed. It simply is.
Four times a year. No exceptions.
For scholars and seekers of forbidden knowledge. The Order maintains a library of texts that have been banned, burned, or erased from the profane world. The library is not open to the public. It is open to keepers and to those whom the keepers sponsor.
The library contains works on alchemy, hermeticism, gnosticism, demonology, and the occult sciences, as well as texts that defy classification — manuscripts in unknown languages, diagrams that produce physical effects when gazed upon, and books that are said to read the reader. The library is not a collection of curiosities. It is a working collection. The keepers use it. The texts in the library are not museum pieces. They are tools.
Access to the library is granted through a keeper's sponsorship. The sponsor is responsible for the sponsored individual. If the sponsored individual removes, damages, or copies any text, the sponsor is held accountable. The library has never been violated. The Order considers this a testament to the seriousness with which keepers regard their sponsorships.

For keepers who seek advancement. The Ordeal is not a rite. It is not a test. It is an experience — a voluntary descent into the deepest part of the shadow, deeper than the Rite of Descent, deeper than the Final Rite, into a region that the Order calls the Abyss.
The Abyss is not a place. It is a state. It is the state of total dissolution — the self dissolved, the shadow dissolved, the distinction between the two dissolved. The keeper who enters the Abyss does not return as the same person. The keeper who enters the Abyss may not return at all. The Order permits the Ordeal but does not encourage it. The Order considers the Ordeal a personal choice, not a requirement.
Keepers who have undergone the Ordeal and returned describe it as simultaneously the most terrifying and the most peaceful experience of their lives. "The Abyss is not dark," one wrote. "The Abyss is not light. The Abyss is the absence of the distinction. In the Abyss, there is no self to be afraid. There is no self to be at peace. There is only the Abyss, and the Abyss is enough."
